A BRIEF HISTORY OF LIBERAL ARTS LODGE NO. 677

The roots of Liberal Arts Lodge are tied very closely to
the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and to the local business
community (Westwood Village). 1930 was the magic year that saw the formation of
our Lodge. A group of men closely associated with UCLA and Westwood met and
established Liberal Arts Lodge in Westwood Village. The Lodge initially met
over a small ice cream parlor near the entrance to the UCLA campus. Over the
next 30 years the Lodge continued to grow creating the need to move to several
larger locations until in 1960, the members built their own Lodge building on
Westwood Boulevard.
In the more than seventy-five years since that small
charter group assembled over the ice cream parlor in Westwood Village, Liberal
Arts Lodge has continued to mature and has grown, prospered and served its
members well. At this time, we are more diverse in all aspects – age,
occupation, religion, ethnicity and education. The result is a blending that
has created an appreciation and understanding of our differences as well as our
similarities. It would be impossible to list the names of all those who have
contributed faithfully to the life and welfare of the Lodge or to enumerate the
distinctions achieved by so many of our brethren in service to the Grand Lodge
of California and their community. The combined work of every member over the
years has made Liberal Arts Lodge No. 677 what it is today. Our Lodge has the
reputation of being one of the friendliest Lodges in California, and the bond of
brotherhood is stronger than ever.
